Families and carers

Families and carers provide critical support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people undergoing cancer-related testing, treatment or care. They may provide emotional, social or financial support, and can help with communication between the person and their health care team.

Families and carers may themselves need support to ensure they can effectively assist with their loved one’s cancer experience.

It is important that families and carers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with cancer have access to information and supportive care services. Information and support provided to families and carers requires the same considerations for cultural safety as information and support provided to the patients.
